Inveraray

An 18th century royal burgh sitting on the shores of Loch Fyne which saw much wartime activity in the 1940s. The Inveraray local history society has more details about this. Tigh-an-Ruadh (now the Loch Fyne Hotel) was turned into the HQ for Combined Operations Training. A plaque at the hotel commemorates those who visited at that time - including King George VI, de Gaulle, Eisenhower and Winston Churchill (who held some of the War Cabinets here).

Inveraray and Argyll offers much to visitors of the area, and the following is intended to give a flavour of what is on our doorstep.

Walkers: There are a great many walks in the area for all levels of fitness. They include short walks within the grounds of Inveraray Castle, or Dun Na Cuiache is the hill which overlooks the town, with the Watch Tower which was built in 1748. You can tkae a steep climb up to the watch tower and it is worth it for the fabulous views. The Forestry Commission has also produced a series of maps with recommended routes.

Cycling: The area is ideal for off-road cycling. Many of the routes are the same as those shown on walking maps. It is a worthwhile cycle from Ardrishaig to Crinan, where you follow the canal tow-path. We do keep a few bikes for your use.

Off Roading: If you feel like an adventure why not hire the landrover 130 and go for a trip along forest drive which crosses the hills between Loch Fyne and Loch Awe bringing you out near Ford and Kilmartin then come back either via Oban, Lochgilphead, Dalmally, Taynuilt, Connel or Cladich.

Hill Climbing: There are several Munros to be tackeld in the area, in Glen Fyne we have Beinn Bhuiddhe for example. The Arrochar Alps are a very short drive away and Glencoe with its hills and history is not too far for a day's outing. Ben Lomond is well worth climbing for views of Loch Lomond.

Golf: There are many golf courses within easy striking range of Inveraray, in fact, 23 currently!

Fishing: Sea water fishing is available on Loch Fyne, see boating section for a flavour of what we can offer from The Old Rectory. Alternatively, Fresh water fishing is available on Loch Awe which is very close to Inveraray. You can rent fishing boats, tackle, infact all you need to enjoy a days fishing.

Swimming: The Loch Fyne Hotel has a 15 metre swimming pool and is a minute or so walk from The Old Rectory. It also offers a sauna; steam room and spa pool. The facilities are open to non residents of the hotel.
